Sarnia Police Service (SPS) now offers a convenient online system for individuals requiring a police record check for volunteer work, educational purposes, or employment. This user-friendly platform is accessible 24/7, eliminating the need to visit our facilities.

The entire process, from identity verification to fee payment, is conducted online. Provided there are no issues requiring further investigation, your record check documents will be delivered directly to you.

Who can apply?

To use this service, you must currently reside in the City of Sarnia.

It’s important to note that individuals under the age of 18 are ineligible for a Vulnerable Sector Check. However, minors seeking employment with municipal, provincial, or federal government sectors can apply for a Criminal Record Check (CRC). Application process

Applying for someone else is strictly prohibited. The security questions for verifying your identity are generated based on your credit file information. These questions are timed to ensure quick and secure responses, safeguarding your privacy. Be aware that applying for a record check on behalf of someone else constitutes a criminal offence.

International applicants

This service is designed for individuals residing and working within Canada. If you are outside Canada and require a police check, you must contact the RCMP to obtain one through fingerprint submission. This ensures that you receive the appropriate documentation for your needs, regardless of your location.

  • How do I apply for a record check?

    An individual can apply online or in-person using our kiosk system at the Sarnia Police Service headquarters.

  • How long will it take to process my application?

    Processing times can fluctuate due to volume and time of year. Please check this page for the most accurate and up to date information.

  • How do I pay and how much does it cost?

    You can pay by debit, credit card or cash when applying in person. You can pay with credit card when applying online. View applicant fees to see how much you'll pay.

  • If I had a Record Check done within the last X months, can I use that for another position?

    It is up to the organization you are applying to determine how long they will accept a police record check for, including a Vulnerable Sector Check.

  • Is applying online faster than applying in person?

    Yes. The application will be entered into queue the exact time that you have applied.

  • Why do I need to create an account to apply online?

    The online Record Check application process is account based as it provides a more secure way of applying for and receiving your results. It is strongly recommended that you remember your: username, password and security question/answers.

  • My police check results are no longer available.

    After 60 days, your police Record Check results are taken down. We recommend that you download and save a copy so you can continue to access your results after they are no longer available in the system.

  • I forgot my username for my account, what can I do?

    Please utilize the "forgot password" link on the secure login page. To retrieve your username, you will need your email address and the answer to one of the security questions you selected when registering your account.

  • How do I get a copy of my receipt?

    You can download a copy of the receipt by logging into your account. Select shield 5 (payment shield).

  • When I try to log in I get the message, "unable to locate account?"

    Please ensure your username and password are exactly as shown in the email you received when you registered your account. If you have registered more than one account for your email address, please ensure you are signing in to the correct account.

  • My PDF Record Check results are password protected, how do I access it?

    The PDF results are locked for security purposes. Instructions on how to unlock your PDF results were provided in the email you received. You will have to follow the 3 steps as described in the email; open the provided link, enter the PIN code and lastly enter the requested personal information, which will be one of the following: date of birth, telephone number, or postal code.

  • If I live outside of Sarnia (or Brights Grove) can I apply for a Record Check with the Sarnia Police Service?

    No; you must reside within the Sarnia Police Service jurisdiction to apply for a Record Check.

  • I reside outside of the country, how can I apply for a Record Check?

    You must contact the RCMP to obtain one through fingerprint submission. This ensures that you receive the appropriate documentation for your needs, regardless of your location.

  • Is there a way to expedite my Record Check?

    No; we do not offer any expedited or rush service. We process all Record Checks in order that we receive them.

  • Do I need to apply for a Broad Record Check?

    A Broad Record Check is only available to those who may care for or provide a service to a child or youth under the Child, Youth and Family Services Act 2017 (CYFSA) or the Intercountry Adoption Act 1998 (IAA).

    A Broad Record Check will disclose all information listed within a Vulnerable Sector Check and may also contain the following:

    Every contact where actions were taken against the person under the Mental Health Act, as it was determined that the person was suffering or apparently suffering from a mental disorder of a nature or quality that would likely result in serious bodily harm to them or another person, or in serious physical impairment of themselves.

    Information about every contact between the person and a police service where there is a written record unless disclosing the information could interfere with a law enforcement matter; person is unaware of the contact, person was a minor at the time of the contact, or information is not relevant to the person’s suitability to perform caregiving duties for a child or to reside in a place where a child is residing and receiving care.

    The release of some of the above information may be subject to police discretion and subject to rules pertaining to its release under applicable law.

    Please note that we will be accepting these applications as of January 1, 2025. Processing time is 2 to 3 months. If you apply with us online, please download a copy of your receipt by clicking on Shield 5 (payment shield). This receipt can be used as proof that you have applied with us.
